Protectorate Faction Guide
Complete ZeroSpace Protectorate guide covering infantry macro, versatile tech paths, hero pairings, mercenary synergies, and best loadouts for Campaign and Galactic War.
Visual overhaul and campaign identity
Before Early Access, Starlance Studios partnered with Homeworld veteran Aaron Kambeitz to refresh Protectorate art direction—units and structures moved from a stylized StarCraft-inspired look toward a grittier, more realistic military aesthetic showcased in updated trailers during Steam Next Fest. Expect heavier armor silhouettes, more grounded textures, and clearer readability in large team fights.
Protectorate also anchors the Orion Sector narrative: humanity's seventh expansion beyond Sol into a sector shared with roughly ten alien civilizations. Campaign progression includes a customizable mothership layer, companion relationships, faction reputation, and Mass Effect-style choices that can alter endings—see the campaign prologue guide before major dialogue forks.
Who Are the Protectorate?
The Protectorate is ZeroSpace's baseline human faction —a disciplined interstellar government built around logistics, combined-arms warfare, and political decision-making that shapes your campaign experience. If you are new to real-time strategy or returning from classic sci-fi RTS titles, the Protectorate is designed to teach fundamentals without punishing experimentation. Their roster emphasizes versatile infantry, reliable mid-game power spikes, and flexible responses to harassment.
In the Early Access launch on July 20, 2026, the Protectorate anchors much of the Campaign narrative. Dialogue choices carry Mass Effect-style consequences, and certain heroes like Nero unlock or restrict unit lines depending on your political alignment. That RPG layer sits on top of a solid RTS core: expand, secure control towers, invest in tech, and transition from skirmishing infantry into a coordinated army.
Compared to the swarm aggression of the Grell, the fusion complexity of the Xol, or the slow attrition of the Legion, the Protectorate occupies the middle ground. You win by out-executing opponents in macro rather than relying on a single gimmick. That predictability is both a strength for learning and a weakness against early all-ins before your tech completes.
- Core identity: Balanced macro, versatile infantry, strong commando play
- Weakness: Vulnerable to early aggression before key tech finishes
- Best modes: Campaign, structured Skirmish, and defensive Galactic War holds
- Loadout slot: Main faction —pair with any of the six mercenary factions and a hero
Playstyle and Tech Progression
Protectorate players should think in phases. Early game revolves around securing economy, scouting enemy mercenary picks, and deciding whether your opponent is committing to an aggressive opener. Your infantry core scales well into the mid-game, where commando units and jump-capable squads begin to define engagements. Grace, the Protectorate field commander hero, amplifies this phase by boosting infantry damage and extending commando jump range —making her a staple in many recommended loadouts.
Tech investment follows a fork: you can prioritize faster military production for PvP pressure, or lean into economic upgrades for long Galactic War sessions. Control towers matter enormously. Denying towers early hurts every faction, but the Protectorate especially needs tower income to reach its mid-tier power spike on schedule. Read our Control Towers and Tech Trees guide for map-specific timing.
When building a full loadout —main faction plus mercenary plus hero —Protectorate pairs cleanly with defensive mercenaries like Marran for tower holds, or aggressive mercenaries like Valkaru to cover your early weakness. Use the Loadout Builder to test combinations before ranked play. Grinder complements siege-oriented Protectorate armies, while Mirror supports information-heavy Galactic War scouting when you need to avoid blind engagements.
In co-op, Protectorate players often take the flexible "fixer" role: they stabilize the front while a Grell partner floods the map or a Legion partner anchors a late-game push. The faction rewards players who communicate tower timings and share vision —see Co-op mode for squad composition tips.
Matchups, Mercenaries, and Competitive Notes
Against Grell, Protectorate must answer map control before biomass snowballs. Early tower contests and Valkaru shock troops can disrupt creep expansion. Against Xol, expect fusion combos and adaptive robotics —Protectorate's reliable infantry DPS punishes misexecuted fusion if you maintain vision and focus fire. Against Legion, trade space for time: Legion wants a slow economic lead into heavy armor; Protectorate wins by denying expansions and finishing before super-heavy units arrive.
Mercenary selection defines your sub-identity. Marran + Hel creates a shield wall that excels in Galactic War defensive picks. Dread Raiders add harassment that Protectorate lacks natively. Endari void manipulation enables flanks that pair well with Grace-led infantry rushes. None of these choices replace your main faction units —mercenaries supplement gaps rather than override Protectorate's infantry identity.
For ranked and seasonal play during Galactic War Season Zero (July 20–August 2, 2026), Protectorate loadouts appear frequently in "safe" tier placements because they adapt to multiple map layouts. They are rarely the flashiest PvP meta pick, but they punish greedy expansions and reward fundamentals. New players should start with our How to Play guide, then specialize with the Campaign Prologue walkthrough to learn hero-driven narrative branches.
