ZeroSpace Skirmish Mode

Skirmish in ZeroSpace lets you battle AI or friends on standalone RTS maps. Practice factions, mercenaries, and builds before Galactic War.

Sandbox RTS battles on demand

Skirmish is ZeroSpace's classic quick-play RTS mode: pick a map, choose your faction and AI difficulty (or human opponents where supported), and fight a self-contained battle without galactic map consequences. For players entering Steam Early Access on July 20, 2026, skirmish is the lowest-friction way to learn economies, hero timings, and mercenary combos before stepping into Galactic War Season Zero or the branching campaign.

All four factionsProtectorate, Grell, Xol, and Legion—are selectable, along with any mercenaries you have unlocked through progression. Skirmish respects your persistent hero loadout, so upgrades earned in campaign carry over, mirroring competitive conditions more accurately than a sterile demo would.

Map variety is catalogued on the skirmish maps page. Layout differences—open expansions versus tight chokepoints—change which PvP builds feel strongest even against AI.

Why skirmish matters for improvement

Competitive ZeroSpace rewards players who understand power spikes: when a second hero ability comes online, when mercenary actives align with a push, when control towers flip a losing fight. Skirmish isolates those moments without the strategic distraction of a galactic board. Set AI to mirror common human strategies—early aggression, greedy expansion, or tech rush—to rehearse counters you will need in Season Zero.

  • Faction lab —Test alternate factions before committing main accounts in ranked play.
  • Mercenary trials —Swap among seven mercenaries to find synergies documented in the loadout tier list.
  • Build orders —Practice harvest timings and production queues from the how to play guide until muscle memory sticks.
  • Settings tuning —Adjust keybindings mid-match without ranked stress.

Streamers and content creators also use skirmish to capture footage for tutorials without spoiling campaign story beats.

Skirmish vs other modes

Unlike co-op, skirmish traditionally pits you against AI or optional PvP rulesets rather than structured cooperative objectives. Unlike Galactic War, outcomes do not alter seasonal standings or sector control—losses are learning experiences, not ladder penalties.

Campaign missions script enemy waves and narrative triggers; skirmish uses sandbox rules closer to multiplayer fairness. If a campaign boss fight feels impossible, replicate the unit composition in skirmish custom settings and experiment with counters, then return to the walkthrough with a refined plan.

Hero progression still applies, so repeated skirmish grinding can accelerate leveling if campaign branches slow your pace—balance grinding with story content to avoid burnout before new missions arrive on the release roadmap.

Getting started quickly

From the main menu, choose Skirmish, select a map from the roster, pick faction and mercenary loadout via the in-game editor or pre-plan with our loadout builder. Start on medium AI difficulty until you can execute a basic two-base timing attack without supply bottlenecks.

Enable recommended quality-of-life controls—camera edge scroll speed, control group persistence, and attack-move behavior—to match what high-level players use in Galactic War. Verify performance against the system requirements page if large unit counts stutter.

When ready, graduate to Galactic War using the beginner guide, or read our Early Access review for mode comparisons at launch.

Custom skirmish lobbies at launch typically expose AI difficulty tiers, starting resource modifiers, and map selection without requiring seasonal passes or extra downloads. Use these toggles to simulate behind-in-economy scenarios or defend against rush-heavy AI profiles that mimic popular Grell ladder strategies. Recording your skirmish replays—if supported in settings—accelerates review of production gaps you might miss in the moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does skirmish use my campaign hero progress?
Yes. Skirmish uses your persistent hero level, loadouts, and unlocked mercenaries, similar to Galactic War and co-op.
Can I play skirmish against friends?
Skirmish supports custom matches against AI and human opponents depending on lobby options at launch. Co-op structured missions are separate under co-op mode.
Are skirmish maps the same as Galactic War battle maps?
Many layouts overlap, but Galactic War adds seasonal modifiers and context from the galactic layer. See the skirmish and Galactic War map pages for lists.
What AI difficulty should I start on?
Medium difficulty is ideal for learning build orders. Increase difficulty once you can hit timing attacks reliably with your main faction.
Does skirmish affect Galactic War rank?
No. Skirmish is unranked practice. Only Galactic War seasonal matches affect competitive standing during Season Zero.
